Pentland Ferries has confirmed that its Resident Discount Scheme (RDS) will become a permanent feature of its fares from 1 April 2026, securing long-term discounted travel for Orkney residents.
Introduced in 2023 and funded directly by the company, the scheme has helped make everyday journeys between St Margaret’s Hope and Gills Bay more affordable for islanders. Following strong uptake and positive feedback from the community, the company has committed to keeping the reduced fares in place permanently.
Managing Director Helen Inkster said: “We know how vital ferry travel is for families, businesses and essential services across Orkney. Since introducing the Resident Discount Scheme, we’ve seen the real difference it has made. We’re proud to now make that support permanent for our local community.”
Resident fares will remain unchanged at £14 for a passenger journey and £44 for a car journey.
To help sustain the scheme and meet increasing operating costs – including fuel, maintenance and staffing – standard fares will be adjusted slightly from 1 April 2026. The single passenger fare will increase from £22 to £23, and the standard car fare from £49 to £55.
All existing bookings will be honoured, with revised fares applying only to new reservations made on or after 26 February 2026. Coach and commercial vehicle rates will remain unchanged.
